There’s not much traffic on the roads at 5.30am on a Saturday morning. We know because that was the time the Inverness Harriers mini-legends hit the A9, bound for Grangemouth and the 2015 U12 SuperTEAMS competition. As in previous years, we took a boys and a girls team to this multi-event team competition, which despite the long days travel, has always proved popular with the youngsters.

For those that haven’t heard of this competition, teams of four undertake 100m, shot putt, long jump and a 4x100m relay. The athletes get points for their best performances at each discipline which goes towards the team total. After all events, the top three teams receive gold, silver and bronze medals, with the leading team also receiving a trophy. This years entry at Grangemouth consisted of 43 boys and 50 girls teams so there was plenty of competition.

The athletes in gold and maroon all performed superbly across the board and this is reflected in the fact that all eight youngsters came home with at least two pb’s. The girls team performed brilliantly gaining a very creditable 15th place, with a grand points total of 176. The boys team also performed brilliantly, amassing a magnificent total of 241 points, earning them 2nd place and the silver medals. Big congratulations go to Loren, Cara, Melissa, Rachel, Duncan, Eric, Robin and Lewis.

It was a long day for the youngsters (we got back to Inverness at 9.15pm) but each and every one of them was a credit to themselves, their families and the club. I think I speak on behalf of all the coaches there when I say it was a pleasure to have spent the day with them at this competition. And speaking of coaches, I’d like to give a big thank you to Joan, Ian and Joanna for their help on the day. We also had a group of supporters who made the journey down to support the athletes so a big thank you to Clan Macdonald, Clan Ross and young Mhairi, who despite having to get up the following morning at 7.30am for the YDL trip to Dundee, still chose to come down the road with us! A great team effort guys!
