EVANTON XC – by Keith Geddes

Well it was a good day at the office for the gold and maroon vests at the 5th North District league match at Evanton with loads of solid individual and team performances.
The harriers managed to take 7 of the 10 team races and 4 individual age group wins. The performances of the day goes to the U15 boys, filling the first 3 places, and the U13 girls who managed to go one better by taking the first 4 places.
There is only one league match left which is in Forres next Saturday where we have the possibility of 9 team titles and 6 individual titles so we still need as many harriers to turn out for the club.
There will be a bus going through to Forres so please let Keith know ASAP if you require a seat.

EMIRATES SUPER TEAMS – by Grant Nairn

It’s eighteen hours since the alarm clock went off to signal the start of our adventure down to Glasgow. The event and venue? The 2016 Winter U12 SuperTEAMS competition at the Emirates Arena. As we regularly do, Inverness Harriers sent two sets of four athletes, one boys and one girls team, down to take part in this extremely popular competition for those at the younger end of the athletics range.

A quick recap for those who are new to the SuperTEAMS competition. Athletes compete in teams of four boys or four girls with every athlete in the team doing a 60m, long jump, shot putt and the 4x200m relay. Athletes get points based on their performances and their best score for each event goes towards their team’s total. All team scores are gathered in a league table, with trophies presented to the winning team and medals to the top three places. It is an extremely enjoyable day with no pressure on the athletes – the emphasis is on having fun.

Our young boys team – Liam Daly, Gregor Nixon, Robert Urquhart and Lachlan Buchanan – performed admirably well and finished in 5th place, out of 53 teams entered. The fact they emerged only 6 points away from a bronze medal shows how packed the boys field was, and the lads should be extremely pleased with their performances.

The young girls team performed just as well in an equally large field of 58 entries. The team – Loren Macdonald, Stroma Fraser, Olivia Robertson and Lucy Clark – amassed a magnificent haul of points to land them in 3rd equal place, allowing them to take home the bronze medals.

All eight athletes should be delighted with how the day went. Their performances were excellent and their behaviour impeccable, with all being a credit to themselves, their parents and the club. It was once more a delight to spend a long, tiring but extremely enjoyable day with these enthusiastic young people.

A big thank you to all the parents and supporters who made the trip south to cheer on the mini-legends – hope you enjoyed your day as well! And finally a massive thank you to Joan and Joanna for all their help! As my daughter would say, as a team, we’re not too shabby!!
