National Short Course XC relays

A small group of junior and senior harriers faced a mud-bath at Bellahouston in Glasgow on Saturday. The heavy rain came on around 10pm on Friday night and did not stop till around 3pm ensuring “proper cross country” conditions!
First up on the day was Lucas Cairns who as a U13 could only tackle the Pollok Parkrun. He finished 22nd out of 310 runners and second in U11 to U14 age group on the day. Not a day for a PB, as the tarmac leafy paths on this undulating course looked more Amazonian rivers. Great to see at the end Lucas getting encouraged from race winner and running legend Robert Quinn who was suitably impressed. Worth the trip for that.
On to Bellahouston and the U15 boys race where Craig Wilson who represented the club well and finished 36th with a great run in 6:59 for a single 2k long lap of the course. This involved running through an almost 25m long swimming pool at halfway! Craig had a good battle with Iain McWhinnie of Fife AC for most of the way round.
Next up was the U17 boy’s race contested for the club by James and Alex Geddes, James finished 27th taking his fine form of late into the race with 10:27, Alex was 56th who also put in a great run to record 11:44 for the 3k loop of the course. James ran strongly and actually ran a good bit of the race with Adam Scott of Fife AC (15th). Adam has this year’s U17 quickest time for 1500m and James acquitted himself and the club well finishing only 20 seconds down on Adam. Alex who mixes his running with football had his trademark sprint to rely upon picked off a few places on the uphill finish to the line.
Great to see the gold and maroon as the sharp end of the junior races and prepared to test themselves with quality fields in national competitions in really testing conditions. Never once did they mention the condition over the entire trip and were a credit to the club over the two days away. Thanks also to Aberdeen AAC for stashing some of the harriers bags in their tent.
The seniors were up next with Craig Campbell taking his excellent form from the North and National Relay’s into this event. Craig being the fastest harrier to previously context this event continued this trend with a mud defying run of 12:52 to place him 24th out of 339 runners for the 4k distance taking 41 seconds off his last run at the event. Also showing fine form was Eoghan MacNamara who recorded a well-deserved 13:39 performance showing again rapid improvement in his distance times over the XC season. Next up was Chris Fife in 157th with 15:05 with a strong run in testing conditions. Last up was Ross Cairns in 196th for 15:34 signing off in his last national event as a senior.
We managed to field four counters in the senior’s race and placed 18th ahead of Local VP Glasgow (19th) Hunters Bog Trotters (25th). Well done to all involved and to the parents for the washing machine carnage that greeted them on Saturday night!
