KIRSTY HITS COMMONWEALTH STANDARD AGAIN

Life member Kirsty Law had a huge breakthrough in Birmingham on Sunday March 23rd when she secured Commonwealth Games qualifying with her second discus throw over the standard of 55 metres. After posting a 54.84 in round 1, she launched an effort of 55.25 in the fourth round which, along with her 55.66 at the Queens Park in September 2013, is enough to secure the selection criterion of two qualifying efforts.
“It’s a  huge relief to get this done at this early stage,” she said. “Because this now means that I can now spend the whole period before the Games actually preparing for that competition rather than having to use all the time through to the selection deadline in June chasing the qualifying standard. It was great to get the first one at the Queens Park last year and now having got the second in good time is a huge help. I was due to compete at Loughborough last month but the event was cancelled to I just decided to do this one and I’m really glad I did.”
This marks considerable progress for an athlete whose first honour in the sport was the under 11 North cross country league title in 1998! Kirsty’s programme in the early summer includes our own club throws competition on Friday April 25th.
Rachael MacKenzie needs just one more high jump clearance of 1.80m while Jamie Bowie is in Florida preparing for an assault on the extremly difficult men’s 400m mark of 45.65 sec.
