FOUR HARRIERS IN THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES!
Commonwealth Games Scotland have now confirmed that no fewer than four of Inverness Harriers’ top athletes will be in the Scottish team for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Jamie Bowie (4 x 400m relay), Kirsty Law (discus), Rachael MacKenzie (high jump) and Jason MacLean (disability 100m) will all compete for Scotland at Hampden Park.
This would be an huge achievement for any athletics club, but for a club based in the Highlands it’s absolutely incredible,” said President Keith Geddes. “Better still, all four compete regularly for our club, they all got to where they now are through the ranks of Inverness Harriers and Jason and Rachael have done it all whilst based in Inverness at the Queens Park and coached locally by Charlie Forbes abd Dianne Chisholm, who is Rachael’s mother.”
If Rachael and Kirsty get through their preliminaries, this will mean that, also including Jamie in the relay heats, three Inverness Harriers will be competing in the same session of the Games on Friday 1st August. This has already been potentially dubbed “Fab Friday” within the club.
Kirsty said: “I’m just absolutely thrilled that this has now been confirmed since the selection period seemed like such a long time for all four of us. It’s wonderful to get to compete for Scotland in a home Games and for a club up in the Highlands to have four team members is a great achievement. I think I can speak for us all when I say how much the club has done to help us get where we are.”
Up until now, five Inverness Harriers have gained Commonwealth selections. Neil Fraser (hurdles), George Patience (discus) and Jayne Barnetson (high jump) were in Edinburgh in 1986, Russell Devine (hammer) in Victoria, Canada, in 1994 and Lesley Clarkson (4 x 400m relay) in Manchester in 2002.
