Petrofac League Triumph

The club had a major triumph at the Petrofac League final at Queens Park on September 5th where we won eight out of ten titles against opposition from across the North and North East. This is possibly the most dominant performance by a single club in the history of the league. The Harriers took all five women's age groups as well as the under 13, under 15 and under 17 boys' sections. We also fielded a women's 4 x 400m relay team consisting entirely of full Scottish internationalists which set what we believe to be the fastest time this year by a Scottish club team of 3 minutes 54.25 sec. This also improved the league record by a massive 7.95 sec and the Inverness club record by an even larger 9.79 sec. The Inverness relay team consisted of Kathryn Evans who has been selected for Scotland in the 4 x 400m relay for next month's Commonwealth Games in Delhi, Sarah Smith and Jade MacLaren who also won the individual 400m events and high jumper Rachael MacKenzie

NEW CLUB RECORD

Jamie Bowie set a new club 400m record of 47.24 sec in the heats of the UK Senior Championships in Birmingham on Saturday where he progressed to take 6th place in the B final in 47.67 sec. His heat time improved his own record by 0.02 sec and during the day he also beat both the athletes who finished ahead of him when he won bronze at the previous weekend's UK under 23 championships. He now goes on to contest the French elite championships on July 8-10 and the Scottish senior championships on July 17.
Jamie's 400m performance is one of a number of Inverness Harriers club records which are of the very highest calibre. Jayne Barnetson's 1.91m high jump and 5803pts in the heptathlon have also been national records for the last 20 years. Neil Fraser's 14.11 sec in the 110m hurdles was the national record from 1987 to 1994 and David Barnetson's 2.20m in the high jump is still the Scottish native record. George Patience's 53.48m in the discus was a Commonwealth Games qualifying distance and Lesley Clarkson's 54.44 sec in the 400m was a European Junior Championship qualifying time. There are others of a similar calibre and there cannot be many provincial clubs in Scotland with records of the standard of Inverness Harriers..

YOUNGATHLETES' LEAGUE TRIUMPH

The club scored a massive victory in Sunday's Scottish Young Athletes' League match at Dundee, posting a runaway victory by the large margin of 122 points over the rest of the field.

Inverness Harriers came out top with a huge score of 553 points to win the match ahead of the ten club Hippo select (431) which has all the other clubs in the Highlands and Islands plus two more from Grampian to choose from. Aberdeen took third place with 357 points. A huge effort on the part of the coaches, the team managers and the athletes meant that we only had a single gap in our team which scored a huge number of A and B wins. This victory gets us off to a great start in this league where the top two clubs after three North East section matches go through to the final.

The next match is at home at the Queens Park on May 30th and the third one is in Aberdeen on July 4th.

Are you up for it? MAY.

Inverness Harriers are participating in the Runner's World Coasting Around Britain relay run.

IH are organising the leg from Cromarty Bridge where we will pick up the baton from Ross County, taking it around the Black Isle via Cromarty, Fortrose and Munlochy, over the Kessock bridge and out to Fort George where we will hand over to Nairn Road Runners. Further details of the event can be found at www.coastersgb.co.uk. Runners of all ages, and abilities are encouraged to sign up to take part in this potentially historic event. The total distance is around 50 miles which will be split up into various lengths to suit those running e.g. 1, 2, 5, 10 (or more!) miles.
If you are interested in taking part please contact Graeme Campbell (07810 170222 or graeme.campbell@talktalk.net) who is compiling a schedule of participants, or Jacquie Mair.

Due to the nature of the event, it is difficult to schedule exactly at this time, but the estimated date for us to pick up the baton is 1st July. The event starts in Blackpool on 8th May heading north, by which time the large number of individual organisers should have a better idea of how long each section will take and hence a firm date can be set. If you are interested but can not make a firm commitment at the moment, do still contact us to note your interest.

Final Results of The Club Handicaps and The Club Championships

There was a reasonable turnout for the last in the series of Club Handicap races and the Club Championships yesterday and both the senior male and female championship titles were retained by last years defending champions Andrew MacRae and Jenny Bannerman. Underfoot conditions were a problem on the higher ground around the foot of Craig Dunain as a thick covering of snow still causing problems for the speedsters. The junior races were on the more suited racing conditions in the Canal/Whinpark area and first back over the line was the fast inproving Ross Fraser in the Under 17 Category where he was closely followed home by under 15 male winner Stuart Michael who had to sprint for the line to keep ahead of the first female runner Corrin Miller Under 15 who had an outstanding run in the combined race. Under 11 runner Fraser Thom also had a great run finishing 20 secs adrift of the front runners over the 1.35 mile course. Full results can be seen the members results section.

Conditions have deteriorated over the past few days and the organisers have deemed the course too dangerous under foot due to hard packed ice. A provisional date of 23 Jan has been pencilled in for the race but this will of course be weather dictated
Currently Inverness Harriers lead the team contest in ALL the age groups apart from the under 13 boys, the under 15 girls and the men and we are also in line for a large number of individual awards.
